Lovorko Galic asked:

In the contemporary life the word “Stress” can be heard very often in every field of life: school, university, sport, at work. The last one, at work stress is very common in most of the professions today. In every business unit there is a certain business objective, limited with time frame and resources, with great expectation of “stakeholders” that this objective should be accomplished. In the situation of pressure toward the goal, pressure of time deadlines and pressure of limited resources, it is obvious that in the middle of this pressuring environment there is the area affected by these forces. The meeting point of these forces is the focal point of stress that influences person who is responsible.

So how can an individual “survive” in this stressful environment? Is he/she will quit job immediately upon being exposed to stress? Or he/she will go to sick leave? Well, normally the answer should be no. The person should already have or try to learn the Stress Management techniques. Some of us absorb and manage the stress easily, but some of us not. Still, the Stress Management is the skill that can be learned. So, the question is what to do in order to successfully cope with stress.

In order to understand the stress-unstress mechanism, observe the following experiment on the simple sponge. Take the sponge in your hand and squeeze it. What happened? The sponge responded to your pressure by adjusting it shape and size to a new “requirement”.

Take another example, the carton box. Do the same what you did with the sponge and observe what happened. The box “resisted” to your pressure for a very short time. Then it is being destroyed by your hand. Now, let go back to our sponge. If you release it you will see it returning to its original size and shape.

From this example we can learn 3 basic steps of stress management:

1. Anticipate - There is always some “Force” or “Rule” in any segment of our life that we might be exposed eventually. We must be aware of it and be ready. We can not expect to exist in a perfectly stress-free world. Understanding this and adjusting ourselves accordingly will help us.

2. Adjust - When we face stress situation, we must adopt. If we do not adopt we must learn to do so, or we will be hurt, sooner or later. We will learn to adopt stress by following the rules and by observing others that are coping with stress successfully.

3. Relax - Still, even if we are skillful in handling stress, we must find some time of not being exposed to stress, in order to fully recover. No matter how good we are in managing stress, the best way of managing stress is time when we are not exposed to it.

Of course we can not live in isolation in order to avoid stress. We must live and face the life. The point is to utilize time between stressful periods in a best possible way. These periods recharge our batteries and strengthen us for a new challenges.

There are many ways to relax in these relief periods. Exercise, time with friends and family, reading a book, sleeping, enjoin landscapes, watching the movies or listening music, or even meditate.

Remember 3 basic Stress Management rules: Anticipate stress, Adopt to Stress Condition and Relax well in non-stress periods. These three rules will help you to cope with stress easier and to leave more energy for productive activities.

Peter Gitundu asked:

It happens to all of us and sometimes, we feel there is no way out. I’m talking about stress which is one of the leading challenges that the human kind is constantly grappling with trying to understand and deal with it effectively. There might be simple words to describe stress and sometimes it does not need any definition because we all go through it. Experts have been working on effective stress management methods which would seek to remedy all harmful effects that stress is associated with and eradicate it all together. So far, some models have been devised and, they might hold the key to deal with stress and they include the following.

The first model in effective stress management is the transactional model. The first thing it seeks to do is to explain what stress is. This model was designed by Richard Lazarus and Susan Folkman who defined stress in the following way. According to them, stress is simply an imbalance between the resources that are in possession of a person and the demands that they have to meet every day . Usually, when one has to offer more than they have, the next logical thing that will happen is that they will be drained out. Therefore, the imbalance can be viewed from this perspective. Their explanation of stress, further seeks to suggest that one will not have stress when they have enough resources to cope with the demand.

Their perception on stress also implies that stress is not a direct result of a stressor. The traditional view of stress is pretty different because there is a belief that a specific cause or stressor has to be present for stress to be conceived. Therefore, the transactional model has been designed to identify the factors that will predispose a person to shortcomings in regard to their resources. The methods of effective stress management in this model root from the external factors that are unique to each individual and hence the solution to their stress problem will be formulated to act effectively for their case.

Finally, in this model, there is a very interesting suggestion which is that if people felt confident enough or resourceful enough to deal and cope with the demand, then the severe stress aspect might be non existent. Therefore, people who constantly choose to feel under pressure will find themselves more stressed. Pressure can therefore act as a stressor although the model creators do not base their model on stressors. The second effective stress management model is the health realization model which is also called innate health model. This model highly banks on the source of a thought and its ability to shape your actions and perceptions.

According to this model, stress is only a by product of what an individual chooses to perceive of themselves and others. The thought process when affected by negativity, insecurity and other factors, will obviously produce stress. Therefore, this model will seek to help individuals equip themselves with initial positivity which will also be the outcome, escaping stress. After analyzing the above models, it is clear that there are causes of stress or specific sources whether external or internal and one thing that will help you manage your stress problem, is realizing what the problem is and working towards the betterment of your general well being.

Peter sams asked:

Stress – Tips To Get Rid Of Stress

Defining stress is difficult. One person’s horrible day is another person’s walk in the park. We all have different triggers for stress and different ways that we cope or don’t cope. Generally stress is a physical or mental reaction to either internal or external stimulus. Our bodies are constantly adjusting to outside forces; be it temperature, excessive work or even a real or perceived threat. How well we manage this stress can affect our total well being.

Stress is a disease which affects more and more people in the modern society. It determines the hormone release which leads to vasoconstriction and diminishes blood circulation.

A stressed heart works slower, breath accelerates, pulse rises and digestion is slowed down. The psychical discomfort provokes physical discomfort.

Relation between stress and disease

The relation between the stress and the disease is an interesting issue for every person who wishes to maintain health. Stress determines the hormone release which leads to vasoconstriction and diminishes blood circulation. Affected by stress, the heart slows down its activity, breath becomes quick and superficial and digestion is slowed down. Almost all the body’s processes are in disorder. The psychosomatic studies show the way in which stress factors can cause headaches, hypertension, nervous break-down, some peptic ulcers, etc. Researchers estimated that 80% of the diseases are caused by stress. The relaxation therapy through massage can help counterattacking all these effects.

Tips to get rid of Stress

If we exercise regularly, we feel better, and activities are less strenuo

us because our bodies are ready.

Productivity and activity will help reduce stress, as long as it’s for yourself.

Writing a to-do list will help reduce stress.

If you have someone that you can REALLY talk to about your feelings, then by all means do it.

Learning to communicate with others effectively will reduce stress.

Relieving yourself of bad habits like smoking and drinking will reduce your stress dramatically.

Music. It is the international language of good music that transcends all barriers of grief, hopelessness, and the like. Of course, if you listen to “woe is me” songs, that might not be the best way to get rid of stress. I listen to LOUD, fun music with a beat. You can sing and dance around, and sweat out the junk. In a sense, you are exercising, so you are getting some of those endorphins pumping through your blood.

Talk: If you have someone that you can REALLY talk to about your feelings, then by all means do it. A word of caution though. People like to know that they will be listened too in their time of need. One sided relationships where one person is constantly moving from one drama to another and putting it all on someone else, is not going to last long.

How to Get Rid of Stress with a Home Bath Spa

If you have access to a bathtub, then you have all it really takes to create your own mini oasis. Choose some soothing background music that will not overtake the room, but rather help create that spa feel.

Rene Graeber asked:

What really makes up a comprehensive stress management? We often heard of many stress management wonders that claimed to be comprehensive but only to find out later that they are not. Comprehensive stress management workshops have been set up to help people address or cope with stress immediately and properly but the result varied. Some may be successful even in their first attempt while others fail after several times.

Comprehensive stress management is relative in nature. We have different stress stimuli just as we react to them differently on different occasions. A comprehensive stress management technique that works best for one person may not necessarily do well with others. Thus a comprehensive stress management technique works in a case-to-case basis. We should emphasize on what triggers out stress than stressing ourselves on finding out the immediate remedy. Once we learn our own sources of stress we are on our way to making our own list of comprehensive stress management tools.

Simple strategies in coping with stress may just do some wonder. There are some proven techniques that might just give the same benefits as it has with others. Here are some the simple techniques:

Exercise- this is one of the oldest techniques in addressing stress. In general exercise can relieve stress though too much of it can also bring about physical stress. A simple breathing exercise done in an appropriate way can definitely lower the stress level. It expands our lungs and helps expels toxins that can be detrimental to the body. An aerobic exercise can be a good start like brisk walking or jogging. It does not only strengthen our heart, but making us stress-free as well.

Express yourself- some people when they are stressed out often result to displacement as a way of coping. When they are angry they vent it with to other people or to doing things that might be harmful to them. Expressing oneself as a means of coping with stress can be through creative means. Talking, crying, laughing are just some of the ways that can help eliminate stress in our system. When you feel that you beginning to feel the effects of stress, it’s about time to talk to your friends or watching simple comedy flick will help do the trick.

Enjoy a hobby- one way of relieving stress is getting our mind away from it. It can be done in many different ways, one of which is engaging in a productive hobby like gardening for instance. There are other kinds of hobby to get busy with, choose the one that will make you truly enjoy and stress-free.

These are just some of the techniques that can help us get started. Learning new one will naturally come along the way as we encounter yet another type of stress.

Tail Stinger asked:

This is a high stress time. I’ve been diagnosed as depressed. Insomnia is really bad, to the point I dread going to bed. As soon as my head hits the pillow, my mind goes into high gear. Although I have a hard time losing weight normally, I’ve been dropping weight like you wouldn’t believe. Has anyone taken medications for problems like this, & was it effective? I finally got an appointment with the doctor this Friday. I’d appreciate recommendations from anyone. Thank you!
